How to Install Cedar Shake Vinyl Siding

All it takes is a little bit of patience and some knowhow. Your home will have the brand new look you’ve been dreaming about in no time.
Here is exactly what you will need to know to pull it off.

All About the Base

Obviously, a strong base to build on is crucial. You’ll have really good results if you go over existing wood siding or a plywood shear wall, somewhere in the neighbourhood of 7/16 or better.
You can also put your shakes over the entire wall, or as wainscot over some traditional siding. The choice is yours.
Next, add some plastic or woman house wrap. But, if the exterior walls of your home already have siding and trim installed, you’re onto the next step.

Allow Room Between Panels

Your panelling should come with a temperature guide, to let you know exactly how much space you should leave. You don’t want all the panels on top of each other, because they are going to expand and contract as the weather changes. They will expand in the heat, and contract in the cold.

Place Your Nails Carefully

This part can literally make or break the project. Make sure you are nailing in the centre of each panel to keep it from shifting to either the left or to the right.
You also want to make sure you’re not nailing too tightly because this could also be restrictive.

Lay the Starter Strip

Next, you’re going to install a starter strip, starting at the bottom. It’s a good idea to use a chalk line as a reference point for your work. Put your panels in place, while you make sure that the joints are staggered and offset at least 12 inches from the previous row. You want to avoid a hard line, so make sure you’re mixing up each row in length so you have a staggered look.

Check Your Work as You Go

Don’t work too far ahead, even if you feel you’re on a roll. Patience is key, and so is doing it right the first time. Look for gaps, if you see one you probably missed the lock. Fix it now while it’s nice and accessible.
